Parent Questions

The things parents actually ask

My child has never held a field hockey stick. Is that okay?
That is exactly who this clinic is for. Almost every player starts here with no experience at all. The first weeks are about learning to move the ball and having fun doing it.
Are there games?
Not against other teams. We scrimmage among ourselves as numbers allow, so every player gets time on the ball without the pressure of a game schedule. The middle school team is where real games start.
What if my child loves it?
Then they move up. The 3–5 clinic feeds directly into our 6–8 middle school team, which plays a real game schedule, and that feeds Birmingham United at the high school level. Same coaches, same system, all the way up.
Do we need a USA Field Hockey membership?
Yes. Every player in every one of our programs needs a current membership before the first practice. It is what covers players for insurance. You only need the State Chapter level and you select Great Lakes as the affiliation. It is good for a year and carries over to any other program we run, including winter.
Do we need to buy a lot of gear?
A stick, shin guards and a mouthguard. That is it. The equipment guide has sizing help and a discount code for sticks, and Coach Amy keeps a limited number of sticks on hand if you would rather buy locally.
I have players in both age groups. Do I have to make two trips?
No. Sunday practice for the middle school team runs at the same time on the same field, so you drop off once and pick up once. It is one of the reasons we built the program this way.
Does my child have to attend a Birmingham school?
No. The clinic is open to players from Birmingham and neighboring communities.
